Action Plans for Year 2005

Following are the broad activities to be undertaken in 2005 indicating the broad objectives to be achieved for each activity.

Strengthening Advocacy Capacity: To strengthen WiLDAF’s advocacy for better protection and promotion of women’s rights through empowering relevant rights groups with information and provide tools for engagement with the government under the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy

Continuation of LAP in Volta and Eastern Regions: To develop a sustainable legal education programme through the development of legal literacy materials for advocacy and improved access to legal aid services by women, men and children

Expansion of LAP to the Eastern Region: To develop a sustainable legal education programme by improving access to legal aid services by women, men and children and in the process document and collect data from the centre

Networking: To promote activities that foster pan-African and inter-country networking, dialogue and co-operation in the fields of rights of women: and respond to violations of women’s rights, regionally and internationally

Engaging the Political Process: To dialogue with particular sectors of government on policy issues that have relevance for women and form partnerships with the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs, NCWD, and GNCC departments on the application of the ‘rights-based approach’ to their policy work with women and children

Property Rights Project: To examine the prevalence of common law marriages, and the extent to which the justice system (extra-judicial and judicial) has dealt with cases arising and begin consultations with various stakeholders including with traditional authorities and the legislature on how to deal with the issue

West Africa Advocacy Project: To increase knowledge of the Commonwealth Foundation’s Citizens and Governance Tool Kit with organisations within West Africa and foster regional networks that enhance democracy though dialogue with various actors. Also to identify and address ECOWAS Protocols and mechanisms that have implications for women rights

Sensitization and Capacity Building for Stakeholders in the Judicial Sector:

· To promote use of rights-based approach by stakeholders in their work which impacts on women through continuing the EU project on “Effective Implementation of The Rights of Women” through engaging more stakeholders to enhance use of international and regional women’s rights instruments
· To share lessons learnt by stakeholders with their peers on how they have applied national, regional and international rights instruments in protecting rights of women and children

International Advocacy: To lobby Parliament to adopt the Protocol on the Rights of Women to the African Charter and increase awareness on violence against women in Ghana

Institutional Development:

· To develop monitoring tools for implementation of the 2005-2007 strategic plan and develop the 2006 annual plan
· To keep stakeholders informed of WiLDAF’s activities and produce and disseminate publications and reports of WiLDAF’s programmes & activities to policy makers; traditional authorities, network members and civil society organisations
· To improve the administrative and operational capacity of WiLDAF
· To improve and strengthen the financial management capacity of WiLDAF
· To develop strategies for mobilising funding for sustained and expanded organisation of all activities of WiLDAF
